Created by Ulf Michael Widenius, MySQL is the go-to database for most of the developers that are starting out. A lot has to do with the extensive documentation available for MySQL and the fact that it has been around for many years. While MySQL is free and open source, it has the might of Oracle behind it as the principal developer. MySQL used to be sponsored by a Swedish company named MySQLAB which was bought out by Oracle (then Sun Microsystems).
MySQL is a scalable database software and is used by high volume websites. projects and in critical business applications. However, as applications and services grow, the main database often undergoes shading and multiple database software are used wherever applicable. Nevertheless. it is one of the most, if not the most used database solution out there at the moment.
