MongoDB is not open source, rather it is termed as "source available". This means that the source code can be viewed and sometimes modified but with significant oversight. It is generally deemed non-free for large-scale  applications. They offer a free tier that can be used by anyone for perpetuity but you are given limited resources. Therefore, you can't develop large scale applications on the free tier.
